Supporting UCI World Cycling Championships.

Glasgow Subway has seen its busiest period for some time with more than 470,000 journeys completed during the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.

The first weekend of the event (Friday 4 to Sunday 6) saw more than 132,000 journeys complete, that’s the busiest weekend overall since 2018.

Saturday 12 August saw more than 59,000 journeys complete with a mix of cycling and football at Ibrox Football Stadium all adding to the figures. This is undoubtedly the busiest day in the system since October 2018, and one of the busiest days in the past 10 years.

SPT Chief Executive Valerie Davidson said:

“The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships has been a tremendous success and SPT is delighted to have been able to support this fantastic event.

“Our decision to run extended opening hours on the Subway Sunday to assist those trying to get about the city when the majority of main roads were closed was absolutely the right one.  There is no doubt this was a huge help in keeping Glasgow moving throughout all the events.”

In addition, SPT owned bus stations including Buchanan Bus Station (BBS), East Kilbride and Hamilton saw almost an extra 110,000 passengers pass through station over the last 10 days.  Friday 4 August saw more than 57,000 people through BBS.

Mrs Davidson added:

“It really has been a very busy time particularly for all those front-facing customer service staff who, as always, all stepped up to show the professional face of SPT offering help and direction to the many visitors we saw across all our sites.  I would like to thank them all for their tremendous efforts and hard work during the event.”
