Glasgow Subway supports Glasgow International

Written by SPT 16/04/2018

Glasgow Subway has partnered with two local artists as part of Glasgow International (GI) - Scotland’s largest festival for contemporary art - to create a visual arts project, LOOP, for the Glasgow Subway network.

Inspired by the Subway network, artists Beth Shapeero and Alys Owen use prints, drawings, large scale installations, and live pieces to examine the nature of travel and daily routines, and explore the overlooked absurdities of everyday life.

From Monday 16 April, you can expect to see LOOP throughout the Subway system in a variety of forms. Key works will be installed in our St. Enoch, Buchanan Street and Ibrox stations with live performance art at Buchanan Street and St. George's Cross stations.

In an interactive "artwork giveaway", golden tickets will be dispensed randomly to Subway customers when purchasing tickets or topping up their Smartcard, entitling them to receive a free original artwork or limited edition print. Working with young people from Glasgow Sculpture Studios and North United Communities, Beth and Alys created their installation at Buchanan Street station which can also be viewed as a moving image piece here.

GI will run for a duration of three weeks from Friday 20 April - Monday 7 May with 268 artists, 90 exhibitions at more than  80+ venues of which over half are accessible via the Subway network. Glasgow’s art scene has been described as “the most developed arts scene outside London” by the Guardian newspaper and by the looks of the line up GI has this year, this is most definitely true!
