SPT saw another excellent year of participation in the Kids Go Free initiative, with 185,950 children under 16 travelling free on the Glasgow Subway during the school holidays in 2025. Subway offered a total of 98 days of free travel, across Easter, Summer, October and Christmas holiday periods.
Since its launch, Kids Go Free has helped thousands of families make the most of their school holidays, making public transport a convenient and enjoyable option for young travellers.
-
Easter: 33,732 children travelled free
-
Summer: 105,526 children travelled free
-
October week: 19,056 children travelled free
-
Christmas: 27,636 children travelled free
These journeys meant that families saved £178,274.05 across the year, making travel more affordable while encouraging young passengers to explore the city.
The initiative has also delivered significant environmental benefits as by choosing the Glasgow Subway instead of private vehicles, children’s journeys in 2025 avoided 79.8 tonnes of CO₂e - equivalent to planting 80 trees!* This also replaced the carbon impact of 456 return journeys from Glasgow to London with a sustainable journey on the Subway.
SPT remains committed to inclusive and sustainable travel through the Kids Go Free scheme, continuing the initiative for the 2026 school holidays.
*Assumes the average journey distance of 3.2 km on the subway replaced an equivalent journey in an average car (petrol). Carbon savings of mature trees in the UK estimated at 1 tonne per tree, according to National Trust UK (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/our-cause/nature-climate/climate-change-sustainability/our-ambition-to-establish-20-million-trees-to-tackle-climate-change).
