Subway WiFi - Q&A
Mobile telephone and wireless access on Glasgow's Subway system is set to become a reality.
SPT and network operator Arqiva have announced plans to roll out the service on the Subway network in the next few months. But what will it mean for customers?
1. When will the network go live?
We’re looking to go live by the end of March 2008, with the service then rolled out to the remaining 14 stations during 2008.
2. In what order is the roll-out?
Buchanan Street will be the first installation and this will be followed by the introduction of the service at Govan, Partick, Hillhead and St Enoch stations. Coverage will be available at the remaining 10 stations by the end of 2008.
3. What will the cost be to the user?
The cost will be that applied by your internet service provider (ISP) or moble phone operator. Details of the cellular operators and ISPs sharing the system are still being finalised.
4. Will passengers be able to use mobile phones/WiFi on the trains or just in the stations?
Initially, mobile phone coverage and WiFi will be available in the stations although the system is fully scaleable to provide tunnel coverage in the future.
