Rail services in the SPT area

Rail projects

Crossrail Glasgow

Crossrail Glasgow is the ‘missing piece’ in Scotland’s rail jigsaw. Linking the lines running from Glasgow Central and Queen Street stations will close a critical gap in the Scottish rail network.

This is a project of national significance as it will enable services from all over Scotland to connect to a whole range of new destinations. Crossrail Glasgow also has the potential to improve access to Glasgow and Prestwick International airports for travellers from across the country as well as those in the west of Scotland.

An added bonus will be much better connections across the Strathclyde region. At present, there are no direct rail routes running from the southwest to the northeast of the city. Crossrail Glasgow will allow these travel options to become a reality, enabling direct services to potentially run from East Kilbride, Barrhead, Kilmarnock and Ayrshire to the north of Glasgow and beyond.

Partick Interchange rebuilding

SPT has had its sights set on modernising Partick Interchange for many years. It is now over 25 years old and urgently needs to be upgraded to meet the increasing volume of passengers and the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act as well as to improve the change over between bus, train and Subway services.

In 1998 a feasibility study was commissioned which looked at several options for redeveloping the Interchange. This allowed SPT to establish a basic outline for the engineering work and the likely cost and to put together a preferred option for the project.

Now, after nearly a decade of planning and negotiations, the project has moved from the drawing board to the building site.

Glasgow Airport Rail Link (GARL)

The work to secure a new rail link to Glasgow Airport was a major undertaking for SPT. We guided the project through the Scottish Parliament and undertook the vital development stages of design, land acquisition and advanced works. The project has now been handed over to Transport Scotland for completion.
