Strathclyde Partnership for Transport’s free shuttle buses to last weekend’s Glasgow River Festival proved a big hit with visitors to the popular event, providing 14,400 complimentary journeys.
Eleven special bus services were laid on from Kilmarnock, Hamilton and Greenock to take families to the event, on a first come first served basis. SPT also provided a continuous free shuttle bus service from Glasgow city centre to the River Festival.
The city centre shuttle buses ran full most of the time on both days. The services from Greenock into Glasgow proved to be the busiest with many families taking advantage of the free transport.
87,000 people attended this year’s Glasgow River Festival – up 2,000 on the 2007 figure. Decent weather helped people enjoy the fun-packed days on land and water this year.
Assistant Chief Executive Gordon Maclennan was pleased with the impact of the free buses on attendance levels saying: "This is the second year we’ve laid on free transport because we wanted to make it easier for people to get to the Glasgow River Festival.
"We’re absolutely delighted that the free shuttle buses once again proved so popular with visitors. I believe the improved public transport links played a big part in the success of this year’s River Festival."
