Public transport a Women's 10K winner
A remarkable one in three runners in Sunday's Resolution Asset Management Women’s 10K Race travelled to the event by public transport.
Figures gathered by SPT show that its continuing initiative to encourage more people on to public transport proved a big hit with runners and their companions.
Of the 12,000 competitors, 4,500 took advantage of SPT’s free Subway, shuttle bus and parking offer.
Also, for the second year in a row, the city’s Subway system opened two hours earlier than on normal Sunday mornings to get competitors from across the city to the starting line.
Working in partnership with First Glasgow, SPT arranged for 18 dedicated race shuttle buses to operate continuously from key pick-up points and back again.
Buses at Cochrane Street (off George Square) and Shields Road Subway station took runners to Dumbreck Road, just south of the start line on Nithsdale Road.
SPT’s multi-storey car parks were also busier than usual for a Sunday, with 469 vehicles parked at Shields Road, Kelvinbridge and Bridge Street for the duration of the race.
SPT Chair, Alistair Watson said: “We’re delighted that SPT was able to play a part in the Women’s 10K.
"It’s great news that such a significant number of competitors used our services.
"Subway and buses are proving a popular travel choice and the success is really down to partnership working between SPT, race organisers and First Glasgow."
