Nightrider service to be withdrawn

Nightrider logoSPT's Nightrider bus service is to be withdrawn following a 15-month trial.

The service was introduced to assess demand for late night public transport along the route of the two Glasgow Subway circles.

Despite substantial investment and publicity, passenger numbers have not been sufficient to ensure the service's continuation.

Following approval at SPT's Operations Committee, it has been decided to stop the Nightrider service at the end of the current initiative in July.

An SPT spokeswoman said: "The service costs nearly £300,000 and on average there are 320 passengers over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday period.

"We can’t continue to justify a subsidy of about £15 per passenger and, as a result, Nightrider’s last service will be Saturday, 12 July."

With Subway passenger numbers and revenue increasing, SPT is looking at the possibility of extending the rail service, particularly on a Sunday.

The spokeswoman said: "We're looking at this very closely but any extension of opening hours would also depend on additional sources of income to support the Subway’s current maintenance schedule."
