SPT funds CCTV installation at 12 more train stations
£10.5million rolling programme of work continues
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) is spending £1.3million to install CCTV cameras at 12 Strathclyde railway stations.
The work marks the final stage of a £10.5million investment by SPT since 1998 which has enabled CCTV equipment to be installed at 146 railway stations across the west of Scotland. The final 12 stations will take the total number of stations covered to 158.
The next 12 stations to be fitted with full CCTV coverage are Alexandra Parade, Anderston, Barnhill, Bowling, Dalmarnock, Fort Matilda, Hillfoot, IBM Halt, Inverkip, Langbank, Maybole and Thorntonhall.
Minor improvements will also be made to the CCTV systems at Paisley Gilmour Street and Dalmuir Stations. All work is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
SPT will also finance the annual revenue costs of the CCTV operation until the end of the First ScotRail franchise at a cost of £168,400 per year.
SPT Chair Councillor Alistair Watson said: "The safety and security of railway passengers is of paramount importance. This is the latest phase in a 10-year programme of work and means that by next year, 158 stations in Strathclyde will have full CCTV coverage thanks to SPT."

Notes to editors:
- This programme of work is in addition to First ScotRail's commitment to installing CCTV as part of their franchise.
- The work does not cover every station in Strathclyde but does cover the stations where CCTV was deemed necessary as recommended by First ScotRail and the British Transport Police, based on footfall at the stations as well as existing safety measures at each station and the number of incidents recorded.
