SPT provides new buses to upgrade services

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has upgraded two bus services in North Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire by supplying state-of-the-art low floor buses to make life easier for passengers.

Both the Service 16 - which operates between Chapelhall and Coatdyke, via Airdrie and Monklands Hospital - and the Service 178 - which operates between Kirkintilloch and Moodiesburn, via Lenzie - now operate with low-floor buses, rather than buses with a step entrance.

Low-floor buses are designed to make it easier for passengers with mobility problems to get on and off and, with the use of a ramp, they aim to allow easy boarding for wheelchair passengers and those travelling with young children in pushchairs.

Both services are operated by Henderson Travel on behalf of SPT, and this week owner of Henderson Travel, John Henderson, launched the new buses alongside North Lanarkshire Councillor Tom Selfridge who is also Vice-Chair of SPT.

Cllr Selfridge said, "In this modern day, I think this type of bus should really be the norm. It’s great to see that the bus industry is moving on in terms of the vehicles being updated and I’m always glad when services are provided with upgraded buses which make them accessible to all.

"This kind of service upgrade is exactly what SPT is constantly working towards as we strive to make public transport an attractive way to travel for as many people as possible."
