Bus bays investment announced
SPT is spending £100,000 to improve bus bays and shelters in East Renfrewshire.
The majority of the funding will pay for the extension and improvement of the bus bays on Fenwick Road, north of Eastwood Toll.
The remaining money will be spent on renewing eight bus shelters in the area which are more than 20 years old.
The bus bays on either side of Fenwick Road have been used by operators in the area for many years.
However, recently, the number of bus companies serving the area has increased and the bays simply cannot accommodate them all.
The improvement scheme will involve extending the northbound and southbound bays to accommodate two buses. This will help traffic flow and improve road safety.
The extended bays will also have raised kerbs to make it easier and safer for passengers to board and alight vehicles.
In addition, the bus shelter in the southbound bay will be renewed.
A further eight bus shelters will also be renewed - five in Barrhead, one in Clarkston, one in Busby and one in Newton Mearns.
The new shelters will all be wheelchair accessible.
Work on both projects is being managed by East Renfrewshire Council and is expected to be finished by the end of March.
SPT member and East Renfrewshire Council’s environment convener, Councillor Eddie Phillips, said: “I very much welcome this boost for public transport which will make access to bus services easier in the Giffnock area.
"It’s just the ticket for passengers and operators alike.”
