The tour was part of SPT's continuing campaign to secure increased investment in the Subway system and to harness support for other transport initiatives.

Four Scottish National Party MSPs and one councillor joined Sunday night's tour, which set off from St George's Cross station after the network shut down for the night.

The tour guests were Glasgow MSPs Sandra White, Bill Kidd and Bashir Ahmad, Cunninghame North MSP Kenneth Gibson and his wife Patricia, councillor for Greater Pollok.

Assistant Civil Engineer Martin Doyle briefed the group on maintenance work under way on the system and Communications Director Bob Wylie outlined SPT's plans for the future of the network.

Speaking after the tour, Mr Gibson said: "I'm very excited at the prospects for the future of the Subway.

"The very fact that there has been a steady increase in passengers shows how vital it is to the transport network in Glasgow and the west of Scotland.

"What this visit brought home to me was how Glasgow would definitely struggle if we didn't have that Subway."

Politicians from other parties have also seen the system at first hand.
