New public announcement system for Subway

SPT announces latest stage of Subway modernisation

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport is investing more than £500,000 in a state-of-the-art public announcement system for the Subway.

The move is part of SPT’s ambitious plans to modernise the Subway network and the new system is expected to be in place by Spring 2008.

Each Subway station has Public Address Voice Alarm (PAVA) systems which allow station staff to make information announcements and to broadcast evacuation messages in the event of an emergency.

The current Public Address Voice Alarm (PAVA) System has been in place since 1991 but is now being made obsolete by advances in technology. Certain spare parts for the system are no longer available and others are extremely difficult to source.

SPT today (Friday 17 August) agreed to award a contract worth £530,628 to Advance Integrated Systems Ltd to provide a modern PAVA system. Work to install the new equipment will begin later this year.

SPT’s Director of Subway Operations, David Wallace said, “As part of our plans to modernise the Subway, it’s vital that we have an up-to-date public announcement system. Although the current system still works, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.

“The new system will improve the standard of information for passengers by providing clearer announcements with less background noise. It can also carry out a greater variety of functions - for example we will be able to pre-programme automatic safety and information announcements which can be broadcast at timed intervals.”
