SPT joining up journeys to the big match

Free buses to UEFA Cup Final, 16 May 2007

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport is providing free buses to the UEFA Cup Final for neutral fans.

Spanish clubs Seville and Espanyol will meet in the final at Hampden on Wednesday (16 May) at 7.45pm.

Keen to play its part in the event, SPT is providing free buses to the match for all neutral fans with a valid ticket.

Between 4.30pm and 7pm on Wednesday, 30 buses will operate a shuttle service from Buchanan bus station to Prospecthill Road, just a short walk from Hampden.

There will be no timetable in operation – buses will leave as soon as they are full and return to the bus station immediately after dropping off supporters. As many as 10 buses could leave the bus station at any one time. Special stances will be identified by banners saying ‘SPT joining up journeys to the big match’.

After the match, the shuttle service will again operate on the return journey – Prospecthill Road to Buchanan bus station - from 9.30pm until midnight.

All neutral fans will have a ticket with their name on it which will allow them to use the buses.

Seville and Espanyol supporters will have different coloured tickets to neutral fans. Both clubs have made travel arrangements for their supporters. Before the match, Spanish fans are expected to gather in George Square and the Merchant City before making their way to Hampden.

SPT is providing leaflets and posters in Spanish for fans using the Subway.

Assistant Chief Executive of SPT, Gordon Maclennan, said: “When Glasgow is hosting large events such as the UEFA Cup Final, it’s vital that our transport system is as efficient as possible.

“One of SPT’s core objectives is to get people out of cars and on to public transport. The UEFA Cup Final provides a great opportunity to do that – so we are running buses for neutral fans. Hopefully a trip to the fitba’ has never been so easy!”

Notes to editors

  • All buses are being operated by FirstBus and are being subsidised by SPT. A budget of around £20,000 has been set aside for this but final costs will not be known until after the big game.
  • The drop-off and pick-up point at Hampden is Prospecthill Road at Aitkenhead Road.
  • This initiative is one of several projects SPT has been involved in recently. The new Subway Nightrider bus service was launched last month to provide round-the-clock transport for revellers and shiftworkers when the Subway is closed at weekends.
  • SPT is also providing free Subway travel, free parking at Shields Road Car Park and shuttle buses for participants in the Glasgow Women’s 10K on Sunday (13 May).
