SPT to install mobile phone technology on the Subway.
Glasgow is set to become the first UK city to provide mobile phone coverage for Subway travellers.
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport today decided to install new technology in Glasgows Subway stations by next summer.
Once the transmitters are in place, passengers using the Subway will be able to use their mobile phones while travelling. The new technology will enhance the travel experience for customers and increase their feeling of security in the network.
SPT - the west of Scotland Regional Transport Partnership has awarded a 10-year licence to broadcast solutions company Arqiva to install transmission equipment in all 15 Subway stations. This will provide mobile phone coverage on all platform areas, as well as potentially on Subway trains.
The technology is likely to be in place by Summer 2007 and is being installed at no cost to SPT.
SPTs Assistant Chief Executive for Customer Services, Gordon Maclennan, said, "This is a real breakthrough for us as the technology being installed is state-of-the-art and will make a big difference to travellers on the Subway. It will open up new lines of communication, not only for passengers but for Subway staff as well.
"In the past, the size of the equipment required has presented us with a problem whenever we have considered this kind of proposal as we have limited space on the Subway. However, Arqiva offers a much more discreet network of transmitters which we are able to accommodate.
"We are always looking for ways to improve the travel experience for customers and I am delighted that we can now enter into this licence agreement for the benefit of the travelling public."
Arqiva currently operates a network of transmitters in Glasgow city centre and aims to provide service from as many mobile phone operators as possible.
The equipment to be installed on the Subway will also have the ability to provide Wi-Fi coverage in the stations which would allow internet access. Initially this will be trialed at Buchanan Street Station. If that is successful it will subsequently be rolled out to other stations.
