7 July 2005 SPT urges passengers to be vigilant Strathclyde Passenger Transport is putting upgraded security precautions in place following today's (Thursday 7 July) London bombings. While SPT has been informed by the Department of Transport's Transport Security (TranSec) Team that there is no increased threat level to Glasgow's Subway, the number of stewards on duty has been reinforced with additional checks taking place across the system. Safety announcements are also being made every 15 minutes advising passengers to keep their luggage with them at all times, to be vigilant and to report anything suspicious to station staff. TranSec guidance is also being re-emphasised to Subway staff. All SPT staff have photo-id cards. No-one will be permitted access to any non-public area of the Subway without their identification. Cllr Alistair Watson, Chair of SPT said, 'My heartfelt condolences go to those who have lost family and friends in these outrages. I urge everyone to be vigilant but not to over-react to this situation. We have put sensible and measured security precautions in place to protect the travelling public and we will keep these under constant review'. SPT is in regular contact with TranSec, which carries out threat assessments and provides security advice. Update Strathclyde Passenger Transport is not accepting left luggage at Buchanan Bus Station in the light of the London explosions. The situation will be re-assessed tomorrow (Friday 8 July). The move is part of an overall stepping up of security across the transport sector. Passengers are being urged to make sure that they keep their luggage with them at all times. Security patrols are also carrying out additional sweeps. ends |
