Business as usual at Shields Road car park

From tomorrow, the park and ride facility at Shields Road Subway station will be open as normal after initial works into the car park's redevelopment were completed at the weekend.

As part of the £2.7million redevelopment of the car park in Glasgow, around one third of the park and ride facility was closed from Monday 7 July to allow initial investigation works to begin.

A larger, multi-deck car park facility is being constructed at the station which will almost double the number of spaces, improve cycle routes and provide electronic signage on the motorway.

Commenting on the redevelopment works Chair of SPT, Councillor Alistair Watson said:

"I am delighted to say the initial works went quickly and smoothly and that it will be business as usual at Shields Road from tomorrow. It is unfortunate but necessary that the initial works meant the loss of some car park spaces for a month, however passengers can look forward to a far superior facility once the new multi-deck car park is completed.

"When completed, these improvements will make a huge difference to users of Shields Road, and will make it even easier for passenger to quickly park at the station and jump on the Subway into the city centre. As well as an extra 300 spaces, and the improvements in cycle routes, there will be electronic signs on the motorway which will direct drivers to the Subway station and provide them with real-time information on how many parking spaces are available."

Notes to editors

Glasgow City Council were awarded approximately £2.7 million by the Scottish Executive for the project, and as owners and operators of the Subway, SPT are working together with the council to take forward the redevelopment. A design and build contract will be let shortly for the project construction, with work due to take place between Spring 2004 and Spring 2005.
