Partick Interchange development a step nearer

The redevelopment of Partick Interchange came a step closer today following the announcement by Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) that they are pushing forward with the project.

The transport authority has invited companies to tender for the £8.5 million project which will see the existing building demolished and a new purpose built interchange constructed which will provide better access to the various modes of transport.

Councillor Alistair Watson, Chair of SPT, said that this was a huge step forward in the delivery of the flagship interchange facility. Commenting on the tender Cllr Watson said:

"I am dedicated to ensuring delivery of our major infrastructure projects, and am delighted that this important milestone has been reached.

"As the third busiest station on the SPT rail network and as an important interchange between rail, Subway, bus and taxi, Partick is a vital cog in west of Scotland's public transport system. Pushing forward the redevelopment will ensure the station achieves its full potential, bringing benefits for the local community, businesses and the travelling public.

"For the local community the site will be improved with a much more attractive looking station, cleaner facilities, and a more secure area. Businesses will be able to highlight the excellent access to the area and will benefit from any increase in passenger numbers. While the travelling public will find it easier to change between services and enjoy the improved environment.

"As well as being a more modern and attractive facility, the new interchange will include better public information systems, enhanced public safety and security, and easier access for disabled and elderly people.

"This project is a priority of mine and I will be working closely with all the third parties involved to ensure that work can progress as swiftly as possible so we can deliver a facility fit for the 21st Century."

It is expected that the completed tenders will be returned by September 2003, with a contractor being appointed by the end of the year.
