An Anniesland College student has designed the artwork for the brand new Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) Mobile Travel Centre.

Visual Communication student Cheryl Wills won a design competition run by Torrance-based coachbuilders Ferrymill Motors, the company which custom-built the new hybrid travel centre's interior on behalf of SPT.

Cheryl (20), who lives in Partick, came up with a design to emphasise the new vehicle's eco-friendly credentials and reduced carbon footprint.

Cheryl said: "When considering my design I thoroughly researched green transport. Although the idea of the carbon footprint has been used before, I took what I had learned and created a footprint design made up of environment-themed text. I then placed lots of these footprints 'walking' around the bus.

"The blue background with white fluffy clouds also creates an impression of clean air. I feel this combination works well to convey SPT's message and will be easily understood by visitors to the travel centre."

The Mobile Travel Centre is one of SPT's most popular initiatives. It provides people in rural areas with information on local rail and bus services, express and long distance coach services, short stay breaks and local ferry services - helping to Join up Journeys across all transport modes.

The new £205,000 hybrid Mobile Travel Centre is the first of its kind in the UK. Built around a bus chassis, it is powered by diesel hybrid technology.

The new vehicle is more adaptable for easier access to remote rural communities, and is low-floored to better suit wheelchair users, those with impaired mobility and prams. It also offers high-speed broadband internet use.

Alistair Watson, Chair of SPT, said: "Cheryl's design highlights the carbon reduction benefits of our ground-breaking travel centre, and really drives home the message that SPT is leading the way when it comes to hybrid bus technology.

"We're delighted that thanks to her efforts the new Mobile Travel Centre will look fantastic in addition to bringing a greatly improved product to communities when it rolls out across Strathclyde."
