Planning for 2014 Games legacy

June 30, 2009 News

Successful transport planning is an essential part of staging any major sporting event.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators can travel from across the globe to host cities, pushing existing transport services to breaking point.

SPT Chair Alistair Watson will discuss how careful considered planning can minimise the impact on infrastructure at a conference in London on Thursday.

Alongside those involved in the Olympics project for London in 2012, Councillor Watson will detail what SPT hopes to see implemented in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

His keynote speech will focus on how good transport planning can ensure a lasting legacy for the local community, both before and after the Games.

Councillor Watson will discuss SPT's current plans for Subway modernisation, strategic Park and Ride and integrated ticketing, along with improving the attractiveness of Scotland as location for major events.

The conference, Transport Planning for Major Sporting Events 2009, will take place at the Barbican Conference Centre in London's East End from 8.30am - 4.30pm on Thursday, 2 July.Visit the conference website (opens a new window).
