Industrial action which was expected to lead to additional demand on the Glasgow Subway network is suspended following talks.

Rail industrial action suspended

October 9, 2008

Industrial action which was due to affect suburban and inter city rail services on Thursday has been suspended.

The Glasgow Subway system was even busier than usual during industrial action earlier this week and staff were preparing for further increased demand during planned action on Thursday and Friday.

However, that action by signalling workers has been suspended following talks between the Rail Maritime and Transport Union and Network Rail at the conciliation service Acas. The dispute centres on rota changes and compulsory safety assessments.

Ahead of the 24-hour walkout at noon on Tuesday, passengers using the Subway had been urged to leave more time for their journeys.

Extra staff were on duty across the network and additional resources were put in place at Shields Road - SPT's largest Park and Ride facility - which experienced high demand.

An SPT spokesman said: "We received very positive feedback from customers who appreciated the efforts we were putting into dealing with the rise in passengers.

"It was clear from the enquiries we received that quite a lot of customers were using the system for the first time and this was particularly the case with the Park and Ride facility.

"We're now hoping that many of those passengers will now continue to use the service.

"We had a full complement of trains running on time on the day - at four minute intervals during the peak times."
