SPT pays tribute to a dedicated Member

Councillor Douglas Hay

October 7, 2008

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport Chair Alistair Watson will pay tribute to late member Councillor Douglas Hay during this week's partnership meeting.

The long-standing member of SPT and Glasgow city councillor for the Baillieston area sadly passed away on 27 September after a short illness. He was 76 years old.

In honour of the late councillor's dedication to seeking transport improvements, Councillor Watson will give a short speech before the assembled partnership on Friday morning, followed by a minute's silence.

Councillor Watson said: "Dougie Hay was someone who throughout his political career understood the need to improve public transport.

"He was a huge supporter of SPT in all its incarnations, including the days of the Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Authority and under Strathclyde Regional Council.

"He was a great supporter of the need for bus services for the elderly, and an early advocate of free concessionary travel.

"Always witty and tolerant of others' points of view, he was also passionate about the health service. He will be sadly missed."
