Paasengers enjoyed a free breakfast on us by taking the Subway and leaving the car at home.
Car free day breakfast proves a winner
September 22, 2008Our big breakfast bash for Car Free Day proved a big hit with Subway passengers on Monday morning.
By leaving the car at home and taking the Glasgow Subway, passengers were offered a free bag of breakfast goodies, available at selected stations.
We've launched a special joinupmyjourney.com campaign which links to European Mobility Week (16-22 September) and Car Free Day was one of the highlights of the seven-day Europe-wide sustainable travel initiative.
European Mobility Week provides an opportunity for towns and cities to promote sustainable travel modes. The aim is also to encourage debate on the need for changes in urban travel patterns and in particular the need to cut private car use.
The joinupmyjourney.com campaign and the travel pages on our site provide you with a range of information and options to make sensible travel choices.
On the morning of Car Free Day, free breakfast bags were available to passengers boarding at Buchanan Street, Shields Road, St Enoch or Kelvinbridge stations between 07:00 and 09:00.
The bags contained products and vouchers from event sponsors MacB fruit-flavoured drinks, Stoats porridge oat bars, Bradford bakers, James Mackie fresh fruit supplier, Subway sandwiches and Greggs bakers.
The free gifts were given out at Fuelling Stations set up at these locations - with information about switching to public transport also available.
There was a carnival atmosphere in Buchanan Street and St Enoch stations, with upbeat morning songs from live performers to brighten up the daily commute.
SPT Chair, Alistair Watson, said: "We really want to drive home the message that public transport is safer, more reliable, cheaper, cleaner and greener than using a car - not to mention less stressful.
"Our free breakfast no doubt encouraged commuters onto the Subway during Car Free Day - but we want the people of Strathclyde to see public transport as a long-term option and make a total switch away from car use.
"With modern-day concerns like rising fuel costs, the credit crunch and global warming there's never been a better time to make the change."
For passengers who need to drive part of the way to work, don't forget that SPT offers Park and Ride facilities at Kelvinbridge, Shields Road and Bridge Street Subway stations.
