East Kilbride bus station

About East Kilbride bus station

The redevelopment programme

SPT owns and manages East Kilbride bus station, which is one of the largest in Scotland, serving 12,000 passengers per day.

In early 2000, a public/private partnership was formed between Scottish Retail Property Limited Partnership (a joint venture between British Land and Land Securities) Strathclyde Passenger Transport and South Lanarkshire Council with the aim of regenerating the bus station.

The project, worth over £6 million, was three years in the planning and successfully completed in Spring 2005.

The end result is a state-of-the-art facility which will benefit passengers and support the development and growth of the economy of west central Scotland.

The number of stances has nearly doubled, meaning that the new facility can comfortably handle existing demand and growth in future years.

Personal security has been given high priority with the expansion of 24 hour CCTV coverage, clearer signage, high levels of lightingand an emergency 'help point' for out-of-hours assistance.

Safe pedestrian access and circulation will be assisted by features such as deterrent paving, containment rails and clearly defined crossing points.

For passenger comfort, generous roofs and canopies as well as sheltered bus stances offer full weather protection.

Availability of reliable information about local transport services has been radically improved. User-friendly electronic passenger information systems are installed at central points and at each bus stance for the first time in the west of Scotland.

The new modern travel centre offers face to face public transport information, ticket sales, journey planning and support.
