Local Bus Services

SPT commits more than £450,000 to secure vital bus services in North and South Lanarkshire

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport has committed £453,791 to maintain socially necessary local bus services across North and South Lanarkshire.

On Friday 16 August, SPT’s Operations Committee agreed to award contracts for the provision of local services during the next three years.

SPT Operations Committee Chair, Denis McKenna said:

“Withdrawals by private bus operators have left gaps in services across Lanarkshire and although temporary contracts have been previously set up by SPT to safeguard the routes, I am delighted that we are now able to confirm a longer term solution.

“Many local people rely on these services and it is a huge concern – at a time when public funds are stretched to the limit – that a growing number of operators are continuing to disregard them as unattractive because of profit margins.”

The following two-year contracts were approved and will commence on 29 September 2013 until 11 July 2015:

JD Coaches was awarded a £125,000 contract for:

  • service 343/346 Cumbernauld local services

Stuarts Coaches were awarded the £86,250 for:

  • service 47 Carluke local
  • service 135 Lanark local

In addition, Glasgow Citybus was awarded a three year contract worth £242,541 from 29 September 2013 to 16 July 2016 to operate:

  • service 64/164 Glasgow-Parkhead-Carmyle-Halfway
  • service 364 Newton Farm – Cambuslang-Parkhead
