About Buchanan bus station

How has the bus station changed after more than 10 years in SPT ownership?

  • Closed and open text iconsRecent history
  • When SPT acquired Buchanan bus station from Scottish Citylink in May 1993, they took on an old, decaying and under-utilised facility that had seen a gradual decline in both passenger numbers and bus usage. In a £9m modernisation project, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, SPT has turned this facility around to become Scotland's biggest bus station and one of the busiest in the UK. Footfall has increased from 13,000 to around 40,000 passengers per day, and daily departures have increased from 600 to 1,700.

The bus station has been used as a transport hub for major events including the Champions League Final, the UEFA Cup Final in 2007, T in the Park and Hogmany celebrations and has featured in film and television programmes such as Trainspotting and Taggart. The bus station also hosted a visit from the Queen in 1999 and is often visited by parties from other transport agencies from the UK and around the world.
