Accessibility

All areas of the bus station and concourse are wheelchair accessible, and SPT has taken a variety of measures to help make facilities within the bus station as accessible as possible.

What facilities are there?

An information point for visually impaired travellers is situated beneath the main bank of electronic information monitors located in the concourse. This information point provides bus departure information in audio-visual format.

REACT is an audio way-finding system, endorsed by the RNIB, with units located throughout the bus station. When activated, it plays an audio alert directing the traveller to various key locations within the bus station including the audio-visual information point.

There are two tactile maps installed on either side of the information point, one showing the layout of the bus station and the other the local area surrounding the bus station.
At stances 1-22 and 33-57 there are audio information points which provide departure information for that stance.

How do the systems work?

The information point guides the user through a series of interactive steps, whereby the user presses a series of buttons in order to reach the desired destination. The system then displays the stance number and times of departure for that service. All information and instructions are displayed in large print on screen and in an audio format.

The REACT way-finding system is operated via a low maintenance fob. A small unit – similar in size to a credit card – carried by the traveller, triggers an audio message from one of eight beacons located strategically throughout the bus station. When the traveller approaches a beacon, a message is played which directs the user to specific areas within the bus station including the new information point.

The stance audio information point speaks the next departure specific for that stance when the user presses the button.

How do I access the facilities?

Both the information point and audio at stances can be accessed by anyone at any time simply by pressing the appropriate buttons on the terminals.

The REACT system is operated by a fob. SPT has distributed a number of fobs to each unitary authority area who will be the point of contact for the administration of a local scheme whereby individuals can borrow these fobs when visiting the bus station for a returnable deposit of £10 per fob.

If you are planning to visit the bus station and wish to borrow a fob then please contact your local unit listed below.
