Singers in tune with car free message

September 22, 2008

Subway passengers were treated to a musical feast alongside free breakfasts to mark Car Free Day on Monday morning.

Les Sirenes choir helped set the positive tone for the day by performing at St Enoch and Buchanan Street Subway stations.

They sang upbeat melodies, including Nine to Five by Dolly Parton, How D'ya Like Your Eggs in the Morning? by Dean Martin and Helen O'Connell and Wake Up Boo (It's a Beautiful Morning) by the Boo Radleys.

The choir was formed a year ago and has 13 members, all of whom are students at Glasgow's Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD).

Les Sirenes Director, Andrew Nunn, 20, said: "This is a bit of a departure for us, because we normally sing classical songs. It's exciting to be part of something different.

"Most of our singers live in the West End so use the Subway all the time. It's a really convenient way of getting to the Academy."

There was a huge take-up of free breakfasts on Car Free Day, which was held as part of European Mobility Week.

A major aim of the week is encouraging people to think about public transport and active travel, such as walking and cycling.
