One of Glasgow’s largest cultural events takes over the west end from 1 June and we can’t wait to get in the party mood. In its 19th year, the West End Festival features over 100 Glasgow-based organisations, arts groups and local and international artists. Events range from music and theatre, to walks, talks and community galas and many are free to attend.
Opening the festivities on Sunday is local favourite, the Gibson Street Gala, and we’ll be there with lots of goodies and give-aways up for grabs on the day. We’ll even help you register for your Subway Smartcard and Simon Smart, the newest member of our family, will be making his very first public appearance. He loves to pose for a snap or two, so don’t be shy, bring your camera. You might even win a prize for best pic.

“The vibrancy of the west end is what draws people but there’s a great sense of community spirit round about which shines through during the festival. The dynamic programme really does offer something for everyone and with so many stations close by, why not hop on the Subway and enjoy this great part of the city?”
Last year around 5,000 people turned out to enjoy the Gala and this year promises to be better than ever.
There’s live music and entertainment on the Community Stage on Gibson Street and the GOW Backcourt features cool acoustics and vocals. Hip hop acrobatics from the Flyin’ Jalapenos and tunes from piano boogie outfit The Dodgy Characters will also feature on 1 June.
Plus the Gala will showcase works from local artists alongside craft stalls, great food and drink and three separate kid’s zones offering storytelling, kite making, graffiti art and much more. Full programme details.
Gala Director Jacquie Fennesy said:
“The Gibson Street Gala is proving to be one of the most loved events at the festival and this year promises to be the best yet with artists’ displays, stalls and delicious food from local restaurants all on offer. We really value the support from all our partners and I’m excited to be welcoming SPT for the first time this year.
“Many fans of the Gala will be Subway regulars so why not shoogle along and join in the fun. You won’t be disappointed”
More than 1 million visitors have attended the West End Festival since it started. The parade, on Sunday 8 June, is the highlight of the festival. Last year 80,000 people turned out to see the procession with over 300 participants. The festival is supported with funding from Creative Scotland and Glasgow City Council.
