SPT secures £170K for under threat bus services

Today (Friday 20 January) SPT’s Operations Committee approved the award of temporary contracts worth a total of £170,000 to maintain public transport links in these areas.

Local bus services are to be safeguarded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) following the withdrawal of, or changes to, several commercially operated services.

Chair of SPT’s Operations Committee Denis McKenna said: “SPT continues to play a vital role in protecting and promoting vital services.

“Withdrawals and changes to commercial services have a dramatic effect on local communities and I am delighted SPT has been able to work with the bus industry to find transport solutions to continue these bus services.”

First Glasgow was awarded the following contracts:

  • Service 59 Mosspark – Glasgow
  • Service 84, 84A, 84B – Banton – Twechar – Waterside – Kirkintilloch
  • Service 77 Cliftonville – Coatbridge – Carnbroe

Henderson Travel was awarded:

  • Service 226 Hamilton – Hillhouse

Stuart’s Coaches was awarded:

  • Service 365, 366, 367 Harthill – Shotts – Wishaw Hospital – Ravenscraig Sports Facility

These temporary contracts commenced on 8 January 2012 and will run until 14 April 2012. Tender prices have been invited for longer term contracts for these services.

SPT currently subsidises dozens of local bus services across west central Scotland which are vital to communities, but not provided by private operators.
